As James sat down to write the Holy Spirit was sovereignly controlling his pen without taking away or negating the natural process of his human authorship. James wrote freely and creatively, yet was penning God’s very words as he was carried along by the Holy Spirit (2Peter 1:21). What he wrote on parchment was “breathed out” of God’s mouth (2 Timothy 3:16a), and as such was sacred Scripture. This process, called “concursive operation”, is a mystery beyond our limited knowledge. What James wrote was from God and is therefore just as authoritative, true, and ever-relevant as the Old Testament Law and Prophets. Therefore, we read James’ letter as God’s very Word to us today.
