WEBCAST –
The religious culture in 21st Century America is vastly different from that of mid-1st Century Corinth. Therefore, Christians in that time and place had questions about many issues that we as Jesus’ followers don’t face today. The differences in believers’ perspective about pagan religion led to differences in conviction and practice within the Christian community. These differences were harming the unity of the fellowship in Corinth, and harming the spiritual life and faith of some believers!! Nor did it have a single resident teacher who could bring authoritative alignment to their ideology and practices. It was into this religious unclarity that the Apostle Paul wrote to guide these young followers of Jesus about the proper approach to these culturally debated questions.
Although we do not face questions today about the proper way for us to avoid or interact with ancient paganism, we face other practical issues which are debated among modern Christians. The principles the Apostle Paul states in his letter to the believers in ancient Corinth are both helpful and authoritative for us today as we seek to please God and manifest Who He is in a spiritually darkening culture.
