Many years ago an older pastor friend of mine (Jim) jokingly told me that he wanted to be called by and serve in a church with no people. That was because, he explained, “when you have people in your church there will be problems.” Looking back over the past decades of local church ministry the most joyous and most painful aspects have to do with people.
As Paul is ending his protracted ministry in Ephesus in 55AD he addresses a myriad of problems within the fellowship at Corinth. Positively, that fellowship had grown…but “when you have people in your church there will be problems.” We will see how Paul deals with these problems and discover that these same problems manifest themselves today among God’s people.
